Is there truly a “fountain of youth”?

Can we really reverse aging?

Answer to both questions is “yes,” but in a different manner.

There isn’t a magic wand or potion called “fountain of youth.” Neither is it biologically possible for a 50-year-old person to become a 20-year-old again.

However, the way you eat, live, and treat yourselves (including your skin) combine to form the “fountain of youth.”

A healthy lifestyle, which includes healthy state of mind, slows down body’s aging activities and can really make you appear younger. You are aging, no doubt; but at a rate so slow that it hardly shows.

What experts say

Your body (that includes your skin) requires the right nutrients to win the battle against aging damage. Nutrients aid in cell replication and boost their functions. Nutrients are present in fresh foods, not in processed foods. Experts call fresh foods as “alive” and processed ones as “dead.”

You are and you will be what you eat.

Think you are too late to do something about your aged appearance? You are wrong. Self-awareness can dawn a person at any age…and when it does your body responds readily and slows down aging.

So, even if you are about to enter the 5th decade of your life, keep your anti aging hope alive.

The following things will create a “magical” change in your appearance

1. Do this first thing in the morning

A little bit of dehydration and your body gets cranky in its functions. Keep this condition for a few days and watch your skin turn lifeless, saggy, and drier. You begin to feel lethargy.

Do this: Drink 2-3 liters of water daily. Gulp a tall glass (250-300 ml) of warm water first thing in the morning. Better if you squeeze fresh lemon in it. This simple step flushes out toxins from your body’s systems, balances body’s pH, and makes your skin glow.

2. Fall in love with berries

Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, acai berries, purple grapes, pomegranates, goji berries, citrus, tomatoes, spinach, seeds, and nuts are powerhouses of antioxidants – the anti aging element.

Inflammation causes wrinkles. Antioxidants fight inflammation.

Do this: Include the above mentioned foods in your diet in moderate amounts. Eat dark chocolate, one that contains more than 70 per cent cocoa, once or twice a week. Drink green tea.

3. Create a rainbow on your plate

Nature has given us foods in different colors. No, Nature was not in a playful mood to do so; she was serious – she intended us to stay younger and healthier for longer. Deep colors like purple, red, orange, green, and others indicate the food’s richness of nutrients. You can find cancer-fighting, anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, pain-relieving, collagen-boosting, hormone-balancing, and other such quality-laden foods in nature.

Do this: Eat a variety of differently-colored foods. Don’t stick to one or two fruits or veggies. Plan a different menu each day and ensure that your platter has different colors daily.

4. Don’t love the sun, just hug it

According to doctors, your body needs a little exposure to sunlight to synthesize Vitamin D beneath skin. Morning sun up to 10 am is the best. Avoid sun exposure after this, as ultraviolet rays become stronger. They can wrinkle skin and cause skin cancer.

Do this: Stay under the early morning sun for 20 minutes. Then, avoid the sun. So, you only need to embrace the sunlight in the morning; not fall in love with it. Yet, you can let natural light flood your home. It lifts up the mood. Just avoid direct exposure.

If you must go out under the sun, wear sunscreen on all exposed areas of skin. Wear sunglasses to protect eyes and prevent crow’s feet, which usually happen due to regular squinting.

5. Ensure you get this collage-boosting vitamin adequately

Vitamin C is the “antidote” to wrinkles. It is found richly in citrus. Leafy greens have them too. A study reveals that skin that gets enough vitamin C regularly is able to produce 8 times more collagen.

Do this: Include citrus, tomatoes, and leafy greens in your diet.

6. Hate sugar like you hate your enemy

White sugar encourages oxidative stress in the body that leads to formation of free radicals. This breaks down collagen and elastin faster. Studies have proved that these sparkling, white crystals of sweetness are actually a deadly enemy of skin beauty. If you can banish white sugar from your diet, you take a big step towards anti aging.

Do this: Substitute sugar with organic honey. Eat fruits to satiate your sweet tooth. Have your tea, coffee, lemonade, smoothies, and fruit juices without sugar.

7. Kill stress or it will kill your beauty

Research has proved that stress affects the whole body system. Skin is the largest organ of the body, so how can it stay non-affected? Stress snatches skin’s glow, makes it look worn-out, wrinkled, and may trigger acne and other problems.

Do this: Meditate for some time daily. Unwind yourselves by indulging in your favorite activities. Do yoga. Stay happy most of the time. Learn to manage stress.

8. Go green indoors

Keep an indoor plant in your house. It not only increases the aesthetic value of your room, but also serves as air filter. It absorbs indoor pollution caused by chemicals present in cleaning solutions and others, gases produced by various appliances, and more. Your skin absorbs the pollution daily.

Do this: Bring home a potted plant. Tend to it daily. Admire it. The plant acts as stress-buster and air filter. Your skin will breathe fresh.

9. Be a beauty with brains

Applying makeup to enhance your facial features is fine, but don’t be just a pretty doll. Be smart too. Invest in high quality makeup items that suit your skin type and age. Read ingredients carefully. Research and compare.

Do this: Go nude in the face at times to let your skin breathe. Go as natural as possible with makeup. Do heavy makeup occasionally. Focus more on keeping skin naturally flawless and beautiful. This way, makeup won’t be a necessity for you; just a choice.
