In the quest to appear our best selves, we often pick up certain habits that sabotage our beauty goals along the way. Then there is the information overload readily accessible on the internet from various sources, some of which are reliable and others, not so much. How can you figure out which beauty habits to break and which ones to keep?

Here is what the experts have to say.

Beauty habits you should let go of:

1. Not using sunscreen

Most of us assume that the more we sunbathe, the better that holiday tan. This is not entirely true. Those UV rays from the scorching sun can damage your skin. Besides triggering wrinkles and making your skin lose its elasticity, it can lead to skin cancer. So, if you plan to spend time in the sun, resolve to use sunscreen. Invest in a good quality cream with sufficient SPF. Apply the cream at least half an hour before you go out into the sun.

2. Overdoing the exfoliation

That scrub sure feels good and you think that vigorously rubbing your skin with it keeps you fresh, clean and shiny, right? Wrong. While scrubs can help remove dead skin and dirt, aggressive use can make your skin sensitive and worse, break those thin blood vessels on the surface making your skin appear red. Instead, consider using a gentle peel or use your usual scrub with a cleanser or some water.

3. Not looking after your lips

Weather changes can show up as chapped lips. This often makes it hard to get that lipstick on evenly. As a result, you end up constantly licking your lips or even biting them to keep them moist. Ironically, this actually makes them drier. So stop chewing those lips. Instead, carry a good lip balm or lip moisturizer that you can apply when you need it.

4. Sharing your make up

Would you share your underwear? The same goes for makeup!

5. Touching your eyes

Sometimes, at the end of a tired day, it feels really good to rub your eyes. The problem is, the skin around the eyes is very sensitive and by rubbing those eyes, you run the risk of speeding up the appearance of wrinkles. Be conscious about eye care and don’t let any makeup get into them and cause irritation or infection. Also, avoid sitting at your desk, staring at the screen for too long as this can tire your eyes.

6. Constantly running your hands over your face

There are people who have a tendency to touch their face often. Besides being annoying to everyone else, this bad beauty habit, combined with arranging your hair frequently can harm both your skin and your hair. First, unseen germs and dirt on your hands can transfer to your skin and cause blemishes. If your skin is sensitive, that makes it worse. If you touch your hair often, then the oil from your hair sticks to your skin. You do not want to trigger oily skin. So avoid touching your face and hair. The same goes for picking at any blemish on your face. If you squeeze a bit, you risk contaminating the area, which will take longer to heal. Instead, seek professional help.

7. Cleaning your face with steam frequently

Getting your vaporizer going and steaming your face is good, but don’t do it often as it can have the opposite effect from what you want. It can make your skin dry and this will trigger the outflow of essential fatty acids, which in turn create dry skin problems. Make sure your face is at least one and a half feet away from it.

8. Not rinsing your hair enough

The hair care regimen of most people includes shampoo and conditioner. There are chances of not rinsing it out properly. This can cause dull hair particularly if you are a fan of hair care products. Take care to rinse your hair well.

9. Tying your hair too tight

It is nice to keep the hair off your face, but take care not to scrape it back too tightly as this can stress out your hair. Never use a rubber band as it causes hair loss. Instead, use a fabric scrunchie.

10. Last but not least, nibbling at your nails

Just don’t do it.
